Franz Impler’s world is a trip. Passing vivid childhood memories through a psychedelic filter, TDF’s newest animator delights in the surreal. As arresting as it is unpredictable, his work creates “scenarios that wouldn’t be possible in the real world.” And it’s this distinct flair that’s made him a firm favourite at animation festivals such as Pictoplasma and Animest.
A storyteller at heart, Franz’s output is character-focused while his narrative approach nods to a favourite medium. “It’s probably easy to recognise that my style is influenced by video game aesthetics,” he says. Spatially obscure, vaguely mind-bending and wholly immersive, his inspiration is evident – and yet not it’s not the whole story. “I incorporate topics that interest me, like physics, astronomy or society-related topics,” he says. “I also like to play with elements of genres like sci-fi, crime or mystery.” See what we mean by mind-bending?
A pro at producing work with cross-generational appeal, he recently piqued the interest of video giant, YouTube. Commissioned to create a Yoodle that celebrated simulation video games, Franz merged child-like visuals with succinct storytelling – and captivated millions.
“I think my visual language is very much formed and driven by the same feelings and fascinations of my childhood. But I enrich it with things that fascinate and interest me today. So, maybe you could say my present style is an interpretation of my past fascination."
